EVERGREEN UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT RECEIVED THE GOLD RIBBON SCHOOLS AWARD, TITLE 1 SCHOOL AS WELL AS RECOGNIZED BY CALIFORNIA BUSINESS COMMUNITY FOR HIGH ACHIEVEMENT
California Schools Selected for Prestigious Honor Roll issued by the Campaign for Business & Education Excellence
Evergreen Union School District announced today that Evergreen Middle School applied for and received California Gold Ribbon Schools Program Award, the Title 1 Academic Achievement Award and are being recognized as one of 373 California Gold Ribbon Schools for 2015. “This award is a direct reflection of hard work, dedication, and vision of our school’s educational community” said Principal Felicia Ross.
Evergreen Middle School has also been selected by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE) as one of 1851 public schools in California to receive the title of 2014 Honor Roll school.
Schools receiving this distinction from the California business community have demonstrated consistent high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement levels over time and reduction in achievement gaps among student populations. For High Schools, the Honor Roll recognition also includes measures of college readiness. The CBEE Honor Roll is comprised of two different awards, the “Star Schools” Award (1328 schools) and “Scholar Schools” Award (523 schools).
CBEE Star Schools are those with significant populations of socio-economically disadvantaged students that have shown a significant increase in grade-level proficiency over time, which is the award Evergreen Middle School is receiving. CBEE Scholar Schools are schools that are showing significant levels of academic achievement, but do not have a significant socio-economically disadvantaged student population.
The business community is also recognizing a subset of the Honor Roll that has both high percentages of low-income students and high levels of math and science achievement. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Honor Roll schools will receive special recognition of their accomplishments. Evergreen Middle School is also receiving this added distinction of STEM Honor Roll.
“We are so proud of our district, and so very proud of the Evergreen Middle School, to be recognized for the Title 1 Academic Achievement Award as well as by the California’s business community as an Honor Roll School,” said Brad Mendenhall, Superintendent, Evergreen Union School District. “Our teachers and administrators work tirelessly to keep the focus on high expectations and student academic achievement and to continuously improve our practice. This hard work and dedication is paying off for all of our students, no matter their background. Our belief is All Children Can Learn and We Make the Difference.”
The annual Honor Roll award is made possible with support from numerous businesses and organizations including State Farm, Macy’s, Wells Fargo, So. CA Auto Club, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, the California Business Roundtable, and several private foundations. Chevron Corporation provided specific support in the creation of the STEM Honor Roll.
The Honor Roll is a school recognition program that uses only academic achievement data showing improved academic growth over time and a closing of the achievement gap. The Honor Roll list grew from 261 schools when the program began in 2005 to the current 1851 for 2014. The number of Honor Roll Star (higher poverty, high achieving) schools increased from 74 in 2005 to 1,328 in 2014.
